On September 15th, ’95
We heard a weather warning
‘Storms moving from the west
Heavy rain all morning.
Chorus:
Bubble, bubble, what a muddle
Water everywhere.
Bubble, bubble, trouble, trouble,
What’s that over there?
In the brand new Rainbow Room
A puddle had appeared
The new roof must have sprung a leak
Or that was what we feared.
Then the sink got really blocked
Water spilled into the room
So we sent for Mrs Arbon
To bring a plunger and a broom.
But as she plunged her plunger down
Things started to get worse
Instead of rushing down the drain
Water came back up in force.
We stood and watched the water rise
From underneath the floor
It started to create a flood
Which flowed beneath the door.
Mrs Arbon fetched her stringy mop
To sweep up in the hall
But when she tried to clear it up
She had a nasty fall.
She slipped into the water
Fell backwards, hit her head.
We stood and gasped in horror
‘Was she alive or was she dead?’
We summoned up an ambulance
Which came in real good time
To find Mrs Arbon feeling shocked
And wet with grot and slime.
They gave her the once over
Declared her shocked and shaken
But said that they thought
No bones had been broken.
They helped her up and took her home
And put her into bed
They said ‘Now you must rest awhile
Just leave it all to Fred!’
Meanwhile the flood was rising higher
The staff took off their shoes
And filled buckets up with water
To pour into the loos.
The Head called out the fire brigade
To sort out what was wrong
They went up on the roof to look
It didn’t take them long.
Blocked gutters were to blame they said
They soon cleared out the leaves
Which stopped the deluge down below
And granted a reprieve.
The staff sent all the children home
While they cleared up all the mess
And with the help of parents
It was dried up more or less.
The Rainbow Room is still in place
Though it has another name
But this episode will always be
Its greatest claim to fame.
