This website accompanies Bertuna’s Children: The History of Education in a Suffolk Village written by Sue Spiller and published by Arena Books on 17th January 2017.
Bertuna’s Children traces the journey of Great Barton School from its Victorian beginnings to its present status as an academy, and describes its evolution in response to political, economic, social and local circumstances. The narrative interweaves the challenges faced by each head teacher and Board of Managers / Governors, against a backdrop of social and educational reforms since the early nineteenth century.
This website is a supplement to the book.
It is also a family history resource for people whose ancestors lived in Great Barton during the nineteenth century. Material is based on my own research using http://www.ancestry.com and http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk and on the extensive knowledge of Frank Holmes, the village historian of Great Barton.
