As part of the research for Bertuna’s Children, I investigated the lives of those who lived in Great Barton and were eligible to attend the school in 1851 and 1881, but in order to keep the book to a reasonable length, I was only able to include a few of these stories.
This section of the website is devoted to facts about some of these recorded as ‘scholars’ in the 1851 and 1881 censi and others who were eligible to attend the school in 1851 and 1881. Their stories are published in alphabetical order according to the surnames.
Most of the information has been derived from http:// ancestry.co.uk, which was last accessed in 2017. I have not so far purchased any birth, marriage or death certificates, which could verify and add a great deal of detail to this basic information.
I have made every effort to check the content for accuracy and to interpret data correctly and, to the best of my knowledge all details are accurate at the time of publication. However, new information is regularly coming to light, some of which could add to, or even contradict, previous knowledge, and I apologise if anything I have written, based on the best evidence available at the time, proves to be inaccurate in the future.
This is a work in progress, and from time to time corrections and new stories will be added.
I have been unable to find out anything about some of the ‘scholars’. This may be because:-
- their name, place and year of birth was recorded differently in subsequent censi;
- they gave inaccurate information, either deliberately or accidentally;
- they had no fixed abode or were travelling overnight on the day of the census;
- they were missed out by the census enumerators;
- they were overseas in the armed forces;
- they had emigrated;
- their name is illegible in the census or has been wrongly transcribed.
I am happy to be contacted by anyone who can shed further light on any of the life stories included in this site and to work with anyone who wishes to discover more about the life of a Great Barton ancestor.
A number in square brackets after the name of an individual e.g. Rachel Long [541] indicates the registration number of their record in the burial register of Holy Innocents’ Church, Great Barton.
Copies of the burial register are held:-
- at the record office in Bury St Edmunds, where it is on the open shelves as 929 342 644 BAR (Transcripts from Great Barton Church Burial Registers 1563-1992);
- in Holy Innocents’ Church, Great Barton, accessed via the church wardens.

It is the intention of the author to publish details of the lives of male scholars for 1851 and 1881 and of female scholars for 1881 after the publication of the 1921 population census of Great Britain
