ABOUT THIS BOOK
The Pykkerell is situated in Ixworth, a picturesque village in West
Suffolk. It is a historic building whose story is woven into the life of
the community, which it has served since the reign of Henry VIII.
The original parts of the building date back to the 1530s, since
when it has been extended, altered and refurbished on many
occasions. But this is not only the story of the building; it is the
story of its owners, landlords, patrons and events, set in the
context of the local and national events at the time.
The Pykkerell began as a hostelry, offering accommodation to
pilgrims and other travellers, and reached its zenith during the
eighteenth century when it was on the stage coach route between
London, Norwich and Great Yarmouth. During the nineteenth
century, it was the headquarters of Ixworth Farmers Club, founded
by Sir Edward Greene, MP, whose company, Greene King,
purchased The Pykkerell in 1890.
The book is packed full of historical background information and
should appeal to all who are interested in social history, pub
history, family history and local history
